Alice/Santa gave me the Sony Portable Reader System (PRS-500) for Christmas. It weighs less than 9 ounces and it's 1/2 an inch thin. The E-Ink display is about as close to paper as I've ever seen in a device like this. It takes SD cards, which you can load up on your computer and stick right into the Reader for it to use--so you don't actually have to use Sony's content management app. I've been reading books, buying books from Fictionwise and Amazon. The Reader works with Sony's format, RTF files and PDFs. It plays audio files. I had a spare 256MB SD card, so I'm using that to test some things out, but I ordered a 2GB card from Amazon that should be here this week.
