Any author reading words aloud should check out Mary Robinette Kowal's eighteen--yes 18--part series on how to do it right, I mean everything from the basics, to cross-gender voices, to vocal fatigue.

And I thought I was doing well with my reading of SEABORN chapter one
Thanks, Skott!
What a great link. I would just add (from public speaking experience): remember to breath OUT. You can do this at the beginning of the reading. It might feel like it's taking forever while the audience waits, but to them it's a mere pause and makes you feel poised and in control: not rushed.
Slowly LET OUT a deep breath ALL THE WAY (even forcing a little). Then let your breath come back in naturally. It will be deep but relaxed. This is the opposite of what often happens to speakers: they get puffer-fishy which makes the voice tighten up.
